Garage Door Won't Close in Upland: Causes and Fixes

Upland Garage Door Co. fixes garage doors that won’t close in Upland, and in most cases the cause is the safety sensors rather than the door, which is a repair that takes under an hour. The rest are springs, limits or a track problem. Here is how to tell which one you have before you call.

Check these two things first

The sensor lights at the bottom of the tracks

Each side has a small sensor about six inches off the floor. Both should show a steady light. If one is off or blinking, something is in the beam, the bracket has been kicked, or the lens is dirty. Clear the doorway, wipe the lenses and nudge the sensor until the light holds steady.

Hold the wall button down

If the door closes while you hold the wall button and stops when you let go, the opener is working and the sensors are the problem. If it won’t close even then, the fault is elsewhere.

Why a garage door won’t close

Sensors misaligned, blocked or wired wrong

The most common cause by far. Sunlight hitting the receiving sensor at a low angle can also break the beam on west-facing Upland garages in the late afternoon. A sun shield or swapping the sensors side to side solves it.

Close limit set short

The opener thinks the door has reached the floor before it has. It stops an inch or two up, or touches the floor and reverses. Resetting the travel limit fixes it.

A broken spring

With a snapped spring the opener can’t control the door’s weight on the way down, so the force sensor trips and the door reverses. You’ll see the gap in the spring above the door. Don’t keep cycling it; the opener gear strips.

Bent track or a roller out of the track

The door binds partway down and the opener reverses. Look for a roller riding outside the track or a dent in the vertical rail. This needs a technician; forcing it bends more.

Something physical in the way

A shovel handle, a trash can lid, a car bumper an inch too far forward. It sounds obvious, but it is a common call.

What we do on a won’t-close call

The technician checks sensors, limits, spring condition, track alignment and the opener’s force setting in that order, because that’s the order of likelihood. The technician diagnoses the door on-site and quotes the full price before any work begins.

Frequently asked questions

Can I close the door manually in the meantime?

Pull the red release cord with the door fully down or fully up, never partway, and only if the springs are intact. With a broken spring the door is dead weight and can fall.

Why does it close at night but not in the afternoon?

Sunlight on the sensor. It is the single most common Upland-specific cause on west- and south-facing garages.

The door closes then immediately goes back up. Same problem?

Usually the close-force limit or the sensors. If it reverses after touching the floor, it’s the limit; if it reverses before, it’s the sensors or an obstruction.
